The Mindset to Change Your Life’s Direction, w/ John Brontsema

My whole life was dedicated to baseball from an early time. People say, “Don’t put your identity,” or “You’re not a baseball player. That’s not your identity.” It really is though. While it’s not, it feels like it, because every decision I made, everything I was passionate about was baseball and achieving the next level.

Megan Greenwood is from Peosta, Iowa, and is the owner/founder of Greenwood brewing.

Megan’s first job was washing dishes at the local country club and being a cashier at Greenwood Grocery, her family’s small business in Farley, Iowa. She says she only worked at Greenwood’s twice a week and wanted more spending money, so she became a dishwasher at the country club down the street from her family’s house.

She came from a line of butchers and grocery store owners. Her great-grandfather owned the general store where they had seed, grocery, clothes, shoes, hardware, game, and so much more. He was also the mayor, postmaster, mortician, and anything else you can think of!

The person that has impacted Megan’s life the most is her mom. She is her biggest fan and has the patience of a saint, says Megan. She has listened to her in her worst and best times. She was the small business owner who crossed family lines and bought Greenwood’s Grocery from Megan’s dad’s father. She also completely started her career over in her mid-forties, entering a new industry because she always wanted to. Now Megan says that she is a successful businesswoman and the most hardworking person she knows.

Her favorite restaurant in Arizona is Hillside spot. She says that when she moved to Arizona from Boston, and hardly knew anyone in the state, she stopped at Hillside Spot for a cold beer and to have interaction with people. They had a “new and delicious” beer on tap, and it just happened to be Shipyard Pumpkin Head from Sleep Dog Brewery which is coincidentally Megan’s favorite beer of all time and from New England. It made her feel warm and cozy like she can make this new place home. Hillside forever won her heart that day, and she continues to go to Hillside for inspiration, beer, and their delicious food.

When we asked Megan what advice she would give to someone going into the same career path, she said “I am going to steal Olenka Cullinan’s quote from her interview: ‘Just start now, and it can be small’. I began my business going to a networking event where I did not know a soul and on my nametag, I put my name and my business name. It was the first time I ever introduced my concept and my idea, and it was at that event that I met some of the most key people in my growth and success.
